The award ceremonies were held within a few days of each other in February. Both events had good winners, but some people may think otherwise!

BRIT Awards 2009

There were many amazing performances and lots of awards at the BRITS on February 18, 2009!

Kylie Minogue and Gavin and Stacey’s, Matt Horne and James Corden presented the awards. The theme was very environmental and festival-like. The stage was covered in green grass, with a tent in the centre. Backstage with Fearne Cotton, there was a caravan in the background.

The winners were:

·        British Female Solo Artist – Duffy

·        International Female Solo Artist – Kate Perry

·        British Breakthrough Act – Duffy

·        International Group – Kings of Leon

·        British Male Solo Artist – Paul Weller

·        International Album – Kings of Leon

·        British Live Act – Iron Maiden

·        British Group – Elbow

·        Critics Choice – Florence and the Machine

·        International Male Solo Artist – Kanye West

·        British Single (Voted by the Public) – Girls Aloud – The Promise

·        British Album – Duffy – Rockferry

·        Outstanding Contribution to Music – Pet Shop Boys

There were amazing performances from Duffy, Kings of Leon, Girls Aloud, a special one-off BRITS combined performance from The Ting Tings and Estelle. Take That also performed “Greatest Day” in a big dramatic performance. They came in on an alien spaceship, all dressed identically in black-framed glasses and black costumes.

To round off the night, the Pet Shop Boys performed some of their greatest hits, with a unique show behind them. During one of the numbers, Lady Ga Ga and Brandon Flowers, the lead singer of The Killers, joined Neil Tennant.

Overall, the evening was enjoyable for everyone and, of course the music was good!

Oscars 2009

The Oscars on February 22 celebrated the 81st Oscars!

There were lots of stunning outfits shown on the red carpet – that itself was a big event. The winners, nominees, and all who attended were dressed to impress!

The winners were:

·        Best Picture – Slumdog Millionaire

·        Actor in Leading Role – Sean Penn – Milk

·        Actress in Leading Role – Kate Winslet – The Reader

·        Directing – Slumdog Millionaire

·        Music (Song) – “Jai Ho” Slumdog Millionaire

·        Music (Score) – Slumdog Millionaire

·        Sound Mixing – Slumdog Millionaire

·        Sound Editing – The Dark Knight

·        Visual Effects – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Slumdog Millionaire won the most Oscars, and I’m sure they broke some records in doing so! Kate Winslet finally got her hands on an Oscar after years of being so close, but not getting one!
