Peter Symonds Men’s Rugby comfortably won their first match of the year, away at Ryde College Isle of Wight on January 27 with a solid 12-24 victory.

There were several key players missing for Symonds, taking exams and Ryde commanded more possession and territory throughout the first half to lead 12-7.

In the 3rd third minute Ryde faced a scrum 10 yards from their try line which Symonds won and sent the ball wide to Elliot Culley, who hit the gap created by the fast move out wide, going over slightly right of the posts. Tom Powell slotted the conversion.

Perhaps Symonds players foresaw an easy game and relaxed, but indiscipline crept in and they conceded four penalties to trail 12-7 at half-time.

Symonds dominated more possession and territory in the second half and this was rewarded in the 55th minute when captain Zach Kinnaird dummied his man and slipped through the Ryde defence to score on the right hand side.

in the 68th minute the momentum swung Symonds’ way when Gerard Ellis’ crunching tackle knocked the crucial Ryde number 8 out cold.

Having lost their most powerful operator number 8, Ryde conceded the lead as Symonds took the game by the scruff of the neck. Two tries, one converted, by Jonny Inglis gave Symonds a commanding 12 point lead while Ryde missed a penalty.

The last 10 minutes was all Symonds and they probably could have scored more.
